Ford

Ford re-entered Indonesia in 2022 through PT RMA Indonesia as its authorized distributor. It previously pulled out from the market in 2016. Ford currently imports its cars from Thailand, among which are the Everest and Ranger models. Based on statistics from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), Ford brought in 930 units in 2024 and distributed 843 units. This makes it more successful than others like Subaru, Tank, Neta, Baic, Seres, Haval, Jeep, and Audi.
Ford is also set to build an electric vehicle (EV) factory in Indonesia, utilizing the nickel resources of the country for battery manufacturing. The investment will increase Ford’s presence in the Southeast Asian market.

Jeep

Jeep has been in Indonesia for decades, but it has undergone numerous distributor changes. PT Hascar International Motor and PT DAS Indonesia Motor initially distributed Jeep. Nevertheless, in 2024, it was Indomobil Group that became the official distributor, having entered an agreement with Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep. Even with all the changes, Jeep continues to have a poor sales record, distributing just 31 units last year, and having no reported sales in early 2025.

Chevrolet

Chevrolet stopped selling new vehicles in Indonesia in March 2020 because sales were very low. The brand just couldn’t keep up with other Japanese, Korean and Chinese manufacturers. Though they are no longer officially sold there officially, some special models still enter Indonesia via imports.
Interesting indeed, General Motors who make Chevrolet also worked together, including working with SAIC and Wuling and using factory in Cikarang of Wuling to make Captiva Chevys and they export them to other countries.

Though Tesla vehicles such as the Model S, Model 3, and Model X are spotted on roads, the company has yet to have a local factory or direct operations in Indonesia.

Conclusion
Although some American car brands have left Indonesia, others continue to operate. Ford is expanding its presence with EV plans, Jeep remains available despite sales challenges, Chevrolet is only accessible through imports, and Tesla is growing through independent distributors. American cars may not dominate the market, but they still play a role in Indonesia’s automotive industry.
