Flying cars are no longer the stuff of science fiction. The auto industry is ushering in a bold new tomorrow where cars can travel not just on roads, but also soar through the skies. Leading the charge in this revolution, GAC Group unveiled its revolutionary Govy AirCar at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025, a quantum leap in next-generation mobility.
Unlike regular electric vehicles, the Govy AirCar boasts a unique function: aside from being a typical road vehicle, it can perform vertical take-offs and landings. This two-in-one capability makes it one of the most promising and futuristic displays this year, with plenty of interest generated among industry professionals, media, and the general public.
Previously named the Gove — short for Guangzhou Automobile Group On-the-go Vertical Flight Electric Vehicle — the model was renamed Govy AirCar in December 2024. The renaming reflects GAC’s resolve to commoditize and refine its vision for the future of urban mobility.

While the prototype was first revealed in mid-2024, GAC took the Shanghai Auto Show 2025 as a chance to present a more developed and production-ready version of the vehicle. Visitors not only had a chance to view the Govy AirCar live but were even allowed to get inside its futuristic cabin, getting a first-hand feel of what it would be like to ride in the future.

Two-in-One Modular Design
The Govy AirCar features a novel design consisting of two components:
- Flight Pod: The flying cabin that can be detached, intended for VTOL flight.
- Road Chassis: The base platform that is drivable, functioning as a regular electric vehicle on roads.
In road mode, the Flight Pod is securely attached to the Road Chassis, having its wings and propellers crisply folded for compactness and aerodynamics.
However, when it is time to transition to flight mode, it is seamless. The propellers extend outward, the Flight Pod disconnects from the Road Chassis, and the AirCar rises vertically into the air.
A further degree of innovation, while the Flight Pod is airborne, the Road Chassis is not idle. Thanks to autonomous driving technology, the chassis drives itself to the nearest charging station to replenish its battery for maximum efficiency for its next flight.

Flying Capability and Advanced Technologies
The Govy AirCar flying capability is supported by extremely advanced technology:
- Featuring 12 propellers and 12 independent electric motors, providing stability and lift.
- Powered by high-efficient electric batteries that can provide up to 200 kilometers on a full charge.
- AI systems integrated within, as standard features, will provide safe takeoff, stabilized flight, and precise landing even in worst city conditions.
GAC is futuristic. To create an eco-friendly flying car ecosystem, GAC will bring in a city solar charging network where citizens can refuel efficiently and eco-friendly.
Moreover, reliability and safety have been number one priority during development. The Govy AirCar has already completed over 400 flight tests under varying conditions, severely testing its structural integrity, energy efficiency, flight stability, and emergency protocols.
As a result of this outstanding engineering feat, GAC was awarded the prestigious Annual Science and Technology Innovation Product 2024 award at the Beijing Science and Technology Conference. This award further cements GAC’s status as a global leader in future mobility innovation.
