As a strategic move to harmonize the brand with international markets, PT Chery Sales Indonesia finally unveiled the renaming of its new off-road SUV model. Launched earlier in July 2024 under the name iCar 03 at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, it is now reported to be called the Chery J6. This falls in line with efforts aimed at harmonizing branding with the world market, and that will bring consistency while at the same time boost presence for the brand.

Why the Name Change?
This change in the name from iCar 03 to J6 goes beyond branding; it’s a strategic move toward unification of Chery in both its international and domestic markets. According to Rifkie Setiawan, Head of Brand Department at PT Chery Sales Indonesia: “One of them is we see the suitability of the market, because abroad with the same car (iCar 03) using the name J6, both the Jaecool brand and others and in Indonesia using the Chery brand”.

In short, this statement directly moves into stating that Chery wanted to organize some things by having the various regional designations it was known for, under the different headings on which it operated. With that being said, given it has had great reception with iCar 03 at the GIIAS event, by giving the Indonesian model a different name altogether, called the J6, it could sort out many instances of confusion and identify more the model .
This will, as indicated by Rifkie, have to happen, considering Chery had the complication of too many names or brands under its sleeve. Chery International and Chery Automobile are two different groups of the company. Chery International looks after Omoda and Jaecool, whereas Chery Automobile looks after iCar, among others. Naming it J6 will bring uniformity with Chery’s global branding, making it popular worldwide and easier for a consumer to identify the same model by the same name in other markets.
Why the Name Change Matters
In line with ensuring brand names are not disparate, Chery intends to rename iCar 03 as Jaecool J6 for better standardization of name nomenclature across foreign markets. This will eventually facilitate market repositioning, so that consumers globally find easy products to buy what they desire. It will not be a change by renaming just to pay off all regional identities but further a shift to solidify its reputation globally on both dependability and innovation in SUV.

- Battery Power and Range: With a 69.77 kWh battery, the J6 comes with a battery that will propel it to a range of up to 426 kilometers for those models with rear wheels and as much as 418 km for AWD models depending on the NEDC standard. - V2L External Power Supply: The J6 has a free bonus feature, that is, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) External Power Supply. This facility allows the vehicle to supply power to external devices. This will be a great advantage while camping, as it is possible that additional power sources may be needed for certain activities.
