PT BYD Motor Indonesia will bring affordable entry-level electric vehicles into the market for first-time buyers of electric cars. The premium Electric Vehicle, up until now the name under which that company has been recognized, will become one that serves all markets, from premium to budget-conscious, says Luther Panjaitan, Head of Marketing & Communication of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, while hosting an event yesterday at Bekasi on Monday, 7th October 2024
We must be able to accommodate all segments, including premium and entry-level

The brand has been successful with its variants of EV models, of which the newest one is the M6-a multi-purpose vehicle. But BYD will now look to expand their product lines with entry-level vehicles for a bigger market, first of all with the extremely long-expected Denza D9 and may also come with the BYD Seagull, which is an entry-level model but has already proven to be great in the export markets.

Focus on Entry-Level Models

Luther explained that although BYD is focused on its current offerings, it will also launch new products in the near future that are especially geared to different market levels. “We have to accommodate all segments-all the segments that we can: premium and entry-level,” he said. He indicated that BYD is still among the leading electric vehicle players targeting the highend group and will just continue to follow up with new products to consolidate its foothold.
While it has thus far kept mum about the details of the new entry-level models, it has already increased speculations that highly affordable compact EV from BYD, like the Seagull, would soon land in Indonesian shores.
BYD Seagull has received a decent thrust in China based solely on the aspect of cost. Starting at around 69,800 yuan (IDR 152 million), Seagull is one of the cheapest electric vehicles on the market. But, from what little we can tell about this car, it certainly isn’t lacking; packed with a 55 kW electric motor and 135 Nm of torque, this car is sure to whizz down even the most traffic-ridden city streets and short commutes.
Key Facts of BYD Seagull
- Battery Options: Available with two battery choices: 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh.
- Driving Range: Up to 305 kilometers with the 30.08 kWh battery (WLTP).
- Extended Range: Up to 405 kilometers with the 38.88 kWh battery (CLTC).
- Affordable Price: Starting at around 69,800 yuan (approximately IDR 152 million).
- Compact Design: Ideal for city driving and short commutes.
- Entry-Level Model: Designed for first-time electric vehicle buyers.
- Efficient Performance: Powered by a 55 kW electric motor with 135 Nm of torque.
If BYD Seagull is introduced in Indonesia, the Seagull will be something revolutionary for the local EV market, an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil-fueled internal combustion vehicles. By becoming more and more oriented toward sustainable and green energy, the Seagull may act as an important trigger for the growing interest in electric vehicles in the country.
BYD Denza D9. Luxury MPV
Apart from the Seagull, BYD is also set to launch Denza D9 in Indonesia. In fact, this premium electric MPV is packed with features that match high-end models such as the Toyota Alphard and the Lexus LM 350h. The Denza D9 comes well with a spacious 2+2+3 seating arrangement, and, therefore, perfect as an adaptable family car. The passenger in the second row gets captain seats with leg rests and a massage, that’s simply luxury.
Performance-wise, the Denza D9 is not less intimidating. It packs a powerful electric battery of around 103 kWh and drives up to 620 kilometers on a full charge. Large in size – 5,250 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height – it positions itself strongly as a luxury MPV and can offer much space and comfort.
BYD Commitment to Sustainability
With the increasing demand for electric car in Indonesia and around the world, BYD continues to commit to sustainable solutions. The company will explore entry points into the premium and entry-level markets, Luther said, and ensure electric vehicles are available as much as possible in Indonesia.
Aggressive ambitions are, after all, a pretty ‘exciting’ promise from BYD, and with these, there is little doubt that the company will be a backbone in the rapidly growing market for electric vehicles in Indonesia. From entry-level models, including the Seagull, to top-of-the-line offerings like the Denza D9, the company is well set for a bright future.
