JAKARTA (ANTARA) – In a significant boost to Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) industry, BYD has announced the establishment of a new factory in Subang, West Java. BYD’s new electric car factory in Indonesia has a final production capacity set to reach 150,000 units per year, positioning Indonesia as a critical player in the global electric vehicle market.
Investment and Development Timeline
BYD’s initial announcement came in April 2024, when the company signed a land purchase agreement with PT Suryacipta Swadaya, the developer of the Subang Smartpolitan Industrial Estate. This agreement marked the beginning of a substantial investment of over 1 billion US dollars dedicated to the factory’s development.
President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, Eagle Zhao, highlighted the strategic importance of this investment. “Regarding manufacturing, we will gradually increase our factory capacity until it eventually reaches 150 thousand units per year,” Zhao explained during a limited interview session in June 2024. This gradual increase underscores BYD‘s commitment to scalable and sustainable growth within Indonesia.
Operational Plans
The BYD factory is expected to start operations in January 2026. Until the factory is fully operational, BYD will import completely built-up (CBU) electric cars from China for the Indonesian market. This interim strategy ensures that BYD maintains a steady supply of vehicles while the local production infrastructure is being developed.
BYD’s Models and Market Entry
BYD launched three electric car models in Indonesia in January 2024: the BYD Dolphin, BYD Atto 3, and BYD Seal. Official orders for these models opened in February 2024, coinciding with the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta. However, the delivery of these units faced delays, with the first batch of 1,500 units only arriving in June 2024 due to import licensing issues.
Despite these initial setbacks, Zhao emphasized BYD’s unwavering commitment to the Indonesian market. “Starting in January 2024, followed by IIMS 2024, then purchasing factory land, BYD will fulfill all our commitments to the Indonesian automotive industry,” Zhao affirmed.
Upcoming Launch and Participation in GIIAS
BYD is set to participate in the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) from July 18-24, 2024, in Serpong, Tangerang. The company plans to launch a new electric car model at the event, further demonstrating its dedication to expanding its presence and offerings in Indonesia.
