Tangerang, Indonesia – The 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) showcased an array of automotive innovations, with Toyota’s New GR Yaris capturing significant attention. Launched on July 17, 2024, the New GR Yaris has garnered curiosity from both consumers and automotive enthusiasts, reflecting a strong interest in this high-performance model. Despite the interest, the number of orders has been modest, suggesting a market still in the process of warming up to this new offering.
Launch and Specifications
The New GR Yaris, a part of the fast Yaris family, debuted with two transmission options: manual and automatic. The manual version is priced at IDR 1.15 billion, while the automatic version is available for IDR 1.198 billion, both prices being on-the-road in Jakarta. This new model marks a departure from its predecessor, which was available in limited quantities. Now, the New GR Yaris is not confined to a few hundred units, indicating Toyota’s strategy to make this performance car more accessible to a broader audience.
Consumer Response and Market Trends
According to Anton Jimmi Suwandy, Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), consumer interest in the New GR Yaris at GIIAS was palpable, with many visitors eager to test drive the vehicle. However, he acknowledged that the actual number of orders, as of the show, was below five units. This figure, however, does not include orders from official Toyota dealers outside the event.
Anton remained optimistic, stating that the post-GIIAS period would provide a clearer picture of the market’s response. The modest initial orders may not fully reflect consumer interest, especially given the curiosity and enthusiasm observed at the event.
Other Toyota Models at GIIAS 2024
Apart from the New GR Yaris, TAM’s booth at GIIAS 2024 featured a range of models that attracted significant consumer interest. Notably, the Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix and the Avanza-Veloz duo were major contributors to the brand’s success at the show. TAM recorded over 4,000 Sales Purchase Orders (SPK) during the eight-day event, marking an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
The Kijang Innova Zenix alone accounted for nearly 1,000 SPK, with the Avanza and Veloz models contributing an additional 929 units. Together, these models made up almost half of Toyota’s total SPK at GIIAS, underscoring their popularity and strong market presence.
Another highlight was the Toyota Hilux Rangga, a newly introduced model that received a warm reception. Anton revealed that 450 customers had pre-booked the Hilux Rangga, indicating a positive response to this new offering.
New Models and Concept Vehicles
In addition to its current lineup, TAM showcased several new models and concept vehicles, reflecting Toyota’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. The All New Prius HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) and the Kijang Innova Zenix HEV Flexy Fuel Concept were among the highlights. These models underscore Toyota’s focus on hybrid technology and alternative fuel solutions, with the Kijang Innova Zenix HEV offering flexibility in fuel use.
Also on display were the Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), which uses pure hydrogen fuel, and the All New Prius PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). These vehicles represent Toyota’s vision for the future of mobility, emphasizing low emissions and sustainable energy sources. The Toyota FT-3e, another concept vehicle, was showcased, further highlighting the brand’s forward-looking approach.
Market Outlook and Future Plans
The increase in SPK at GIIAS 2024 is seen as a positive indicator of a potential market recovery following a challenging first half of the year. Anton expressed gratitude to consumers for their trust in Toyota products, viewing the strong response as a sign of growing consumer confidence.
Looking ahead, Toyota remains committed to introducing innovative models and expanding its lineup to meet diverse consumer needs. The brand’s focus on hybrid and electric vehicles aligns with global trends towards sustainability and eco-friendly technologies.
