Jakarta, Indonesia – This partnership between Chinese electric car maker GAC Aion and Indonesian state electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will implement the construction of public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) in Indonesia.
Strategic cooperation for EV development
The MoU signed by both parties represents a start in improving the usage of EVs in Indonesia with the Jakarta region as the initial area of focus. This collaboration is planned to involve the creation and delivery of SPKLU stations with other 27 companies, but the number of targets for the current year is not disclosed.
The COLLABORATION BETWEEN AION Indonesia and Other Stakeholders
Nowadays, AION Indonesia, a renowned electric vehicle manufacturer in the country, leads this kind of cooperation. The Chief Executive Officer of AION Indonesia, Andry Ciu, acknowledged that the company would focus on the government’s plan to achieve Zero Carbon Emission by 2060. ‘It is true, the emergence of GAC AION Y Plus and the signing of this MoU is concrete proof of AION Indonesia’s determination to achieve the Indonesian government’s zero carbon emission by 2060 plan,” said Ciu.
Government Policies and Standards
The Indonesian government has also initially supported the development of electric vehicles; for example, through Presidential Regulation 55 of 2019 which was followed by Presidential Regulation 79 of 2023. These regulations aim to promote the growth and advancement of the EV market and service provision in the country.
According to such regulations, the government aims to have another 3,000 SPKLU units and 250 Public EV Battery Exchange Stations (SPBKLU) for both cars and motorbikes by 2024.
PLN’s Commitment to Energy Transition
Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PLN, highlighted the necessity of collaboration among all relevant parties to drive the energy transition in Indonesia. “As the locomotive driving the energy transition in the country, collaboration and involvement from all relevant parties are needed,” he said. Prasodjo further reiterated PLN’s dedication to expanding the SPKLU and SPBKLU network across Indonesia to enhance the convenience of electric vehicle users and support the national agenda for accelerating the EV ecosystem.
GAC Aion’s Entry into the Indonesian Market
GAC Aion, a prominent Chinese electric car brand, officially entered the Indonesian market in 2024. The company recently launched its first electric car, the GAC Aion Y Plus, in Indonesia. Priced between IDR 415 million and IDR 475 million on the road (OTR) in Jakarta, the Y Plus is set to make a significant impact in the local market.
Initially, the GAC Aion Y Plus will be imported from China, with plans to begin local assembly at the Indomobil Group factory starting in the fourth quarter of 2024. This strategic move not only aims to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles in Indonesia but also aligns with the broader goal of developing a robust EV ecosystem in the country.
Future Prospects and Expansion Plans
GAC Aion has ambitious plans for the Indonesian market. In addition to the Y Plus, the company is planning to introduce at least two more electric car models in Indonesia by the end of 2024. To support these new models and ensure widespread availability, GAC Aion aims to establish 30 dealerships across the country by the end of the year.
Driving Innovation in the Electric Vehicle Industry
The collaboration between GAC Aion and PLN is a testament to the innovative approaches being adopted to promote electric vehicles in Indonesia. By leveraging their respective strengths, both parties aim to create a seamless and efficient EV charging infrastructure that will encourage more consumers to transition to electric vehicles.
The Importance of Public Charging Infrastructure
One of the critical factors influencing the adoption of electric vehicles is the availability of reliable and accessible charging infrastructure. Public charging stations play a vital role in addressing range anxiety, a common concern among potential EV buyers. The establishment of SPKLU stations in strategic locations across Jakarta and eventually throughout Indonesia will provide EV owners with the confidence and convenience needed to make the switch to electric vehicles.
Environmental Benefits and Zero Carbon Emission Goals
The expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure is not just about convenience; it also plays a crucial role in achieving environmental sustainability goals. By increasing the number of SPKLU stations and promoting the use of electric vehicles, Indonesia can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and move closer to its Zero Carbon Emission target by 2060.
Economic Impacts and Job Creation
The development of electric vehicle infrastructure and the growth of the EV market have the potential to create numerous economic opportunities. The establishment of SPKLU stations, local assembly of electric cars, and the expansion of dealership networks will generate jobs and stimulate economic activity in various sectors. This collaboration between GAC Aion and PLN is poised to contribute to Indonesia’s economic growth while fostering a sustainable future.
