Jakarta – BYD, the electric vehicle manufacturer from China, is increasingly taking the Indonesian market. BYD is focusing on innovation and sustainability. Besides increasing an existing line-up of electric cars, this company will provide new models specific to consumer demand from Indonesia. Currently, the company has four electric vehicle models sold in the country, namely BYD Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, and the newly launched M6 electricity MPV, which was first rolled out during the GIIAS 2024 in July.
BYD Unique Positioning in the Market
“It is really different from other automotive brands,” said Luther Panjaitan, Head of PT BYD Motor Indonesia’s PR and Government Relations. Unlike other competitors, which sell a combination of electric and conventional models, BYD focuses solely on electric cars. “The others have models other than EVs that are supporting. BYD is purely selling electric cars. So, we do not want to come here (four models); later, there will be other models,” Luther said in a meeting in Jakarta on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
Clear focus on electric vehicles will enable BYD to specialize in this growing segment and specifically focus on the customers who are interested in sustainable transportation solutions.

Future Plans: Line Expansions
New Models in Pipeline
Luther assured that BYD is truly continuing its efforts in the strategy of launching more models to fill up specific market segments. “We still have space in the entry-level and premium segments, maybe we can take advantage of it in that segment,” he mentioned. Though he did not disclose specific details on what to expect for the new incoming models, interest in future BYD products still thrives.
The Lure of the New Models
A few models have been unveiled in Indonesia, such as the Denza D9 and Yangwang U8. Luther especially underlines the model Denza as being highly promising for the Indonesian market. He explained this while referring to how the company is already available in Hong Kong: “If it (Denza) is already present in Hong Kong, it means it has the right steering wheel. If you want to be brought to Indonesia, it’s an easy problem,” he said.
Market Reaction and Consumer Demand
Excitement towards Denza Model
Luther was positive about how the market would welcome the Denza model in Indonesia. “We see that enthusiasm is quite high. However, we still see what the market looks like and supply. We don’t want to disappoint consumers,” he said. Demand for Denza indicates that Indonesian consumers are becoming increasingly keen on diverse options of electric vehicles.
Getting a Feel for the Market Landscape
BYD is taking a very close look at the market dynamics to see if it should launch new models of electric cars in the market. This cautious approach would ensure that the company meets the consumer demand without overloading its product portfolio. Luther was able to emphasize the truth that understanding market trends is a crucial factor for any successful launch of a new model.
